In 1386, John was born in Capistrano, Italy. When he was a boy, he preferred to play outdoors instead of doing schoolwork. But after his father died in an accident, John took his studies more seriously. He became a very successful and respected lawyer and was later appointed as the governor of Perugia.
When war broke out, John went to the enemy leader to ask for peace, but he was thrown into a dungeon where St. Francis appeared to him in a vision. After his release, he became a Franciscan preacher with a strong devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.
