This story of St. Cecilia is set during the papacy of Urban I, which began in the year 222. Today, many people think of St. Cecilia as the patron saint of music. That tradition arose during the Middle Ages, but the story in this book is based on an earlier account from the fifth century.
When Cecilia married Valerian at her father’s bidding, she told her husband that God had given her a powerful angel to protect her. After Valerian came to believe in the one true God and was baptized, he was able to see the angel. Reading this story about St. Cecilia can help us see how the sacrament of Baptism can strengthen our faith in God and help us view the world in a new light!
