This story of St. Agatha is set in the year 251 during a great persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. St. Agatha had to choose whether to deny her faith in Jesus Christ or suffer a cruel death. She chose to be a martyr, and her name has been remembered to this day in the Canon of the Mass.
St. Agatha was more than a beautiful girl born of noble and wealthy parents. She was a child of God who chose to live for God rather than for the things of this world. Reading this story about St. Agatha can help us see that the most important thing we can do is to live for God – even if we must die to the things of this world!
