In 1813, while in prison for refusing to take an oath to Napoleon, Fr. Gaspar was asked how he managed to stay so calm and happy. He replied, “Be conscious of God’s presence and always do His will; perform each act as if it alone and nothing else were to be done; and do each action of your life as if it were to be your last…let all things be for you stepping stones to heaven.”
In his youth, Gaspar learned to deal with his feeling of anger by thinking about the suffering of Jesus. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of St. Gaspar del Bufalo, who loved the Most Precious Blood of Jesus and saw the trials of life as stepping stones to heaven.
