On January 17, 1871, during the final weeks of the Franco-Prussian War, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in the night sky outside the village of Pontmain, France. Two farmer boys reported the vision to their parents, who sent word to others in the village. They were soon joined by the parish priest, two sisters, and a number of other people.
All prayed fervently and sang hymns in honor of Mary. The adults there saw three unusual stars, but all the children could see the Virgin Mary. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of the faithful people of Pontmain, who, inspired by this vision, had greater fervor in their devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
