Born in 1510, Saint Francis Borgia humbly accepted his duties as a nobleman and served in the court of King Charles V of Spain. Francis married a duchess and together they had eight children. After the death of his wife in 1546, Francis felt called to enter the religious life.
He became a priest under the direction of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. Ignatius told Francis to start Jesuit schools throughout Spain. In 1565, Francis was elected the General of the Society of Jesus. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of Saint Francis Borgia, whose life reflected the humility, obedience, and joy of Christ.
